In Memory
of
Teddy

This is Teddy my dogs father. He died on a beautiful sunny day two years ago.

He was just 3 years old. How could such a strong healthy dog die so suddenly?

Had he been ill I hear you asking?

This is what happened

My dog is called Jim.  He is a red and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier.  I knew that Jim had grown to look like his dad so  I contacted his breeder to see if she had a photo of Jim's father Teddy.

She told me that she only had one photo and that Teddy had died suddenly a couple of weeks before.

I asked how he died.

She told me that he died of lack of oxygen to his brain as a result of heatstroke.

My initial thought was anger towards any owner who could leave their precious pet in a car on a hot day,  but she continued.

He had been playing his favourite game of fetch,  He was so excited running around back and forth,  when he suddenly collapsed.  This lovely fit healthy dog died there in the park in his owners arms. They were absolutely devastated.

My dog Jim also loves playing fetch and never wants to give up. ...in fact he will dig up a stone and carry it around all day on the off chance that someone will throw it for him.
I was very concerned that he may also be at risk .  I had never heard of a dog getting heatstroke other than being left in a car so I decided to find out more.....

Our home is on a busy road and we had a problem of visitors leaving the gates open constantly, even though we had a
'please shut the gate sign'. About 3 years ago we made a homemade sign which read For Dog’s Sake – Shut the Gate with a
photo of Ella & Jim on it.
It worked… No-one left the gate open ever again
